Pacific Coast Borax Company sponsored this program as a way of promoting their products of Borax and Boraxo. The series was created by Ruth Cornwell Woodman, a copywriter for the advertising company McCann-Erickson, Inc. In order to include the flavor of the old west, she made frequent trips to the Death Valley area and interviewed many of the “old timers” for the stories and lore of the region. It’s interesting that a program about the west, was broadcast from Hollywood, but written by an easterner living in the east. The series was very successful and eventually found its way to television with the future President, Ronald Reagan, as host (1963 to 1965). The series eventually had several title changes. First, to Death Valley Sheriff and finally to The Sheriff.

Sponsor background information
The “white gold” rush in California’s Death Valley started with the discovery of Borax in 1873 by a prospector named Mr. Winters. William T. Coleman bought claims and developed the Harmony Borax Mining Company in 1881. His 20 mule teams (actually 18 mules and two horses) traveled the 165 miles of mountain and desert trails in 10 days hauling borax from Death Valley to the railroad loading docks Mojave, CA from 1883 to 1888. The payload of 37 ½ tons of ore and water was hauled in ore and water wagons that were designed by J.W.S. Perry, later a superintendent with Pacific Borax. They were built in Mojave, CA at the cost of $900.00 each. In 1898 the Pacific Borax Company was founded in Searles Valley, CA. New borax discoveries near Barstow ended the Mojave, CA shipments in 1889. By-the-way, Death Valley’s official weather station recorded 134 degrees in 1913, which is still a record today.
