Radio Broadcast Log Of:
Duffy's Tavern

First heard as a audition/test program on the CBS series Forecast, 07/29/40.  The series became a regular on the CBS line up on 03/01/41.  While starting out as Duffy’s Tavern, the name was changed for a while during the sponsorship of Bristol Myers.  It was felt by an employee from Bristol Myers, that a “saloon” was not the proper image that the company should promote.  On radio, sponsors held a large powerful force in the decision and policy making concerning the direction of programs they paid for.  Press releases also sighted listener concerns also over this issue, the majority being Catholics.  Duffy’s Variety was used for a few episodes at the suggestion of Ed Gardner himself and then dropped.  So the title was reduced to simply Duffy’s.  A press release on 03/05/44 was issued that after additional investigations there appeared not to be an outrage by the citizenry and the name would return to Duffy’s Tavern, a name which the listening public had continued to use all along.  On 03/09/44 the tavern was again open for business under its original name.

Many guest stars appeared in the Tavern as you can see by reading the guest star names in the following log.  It was a very popular series not only with the listening public, but also the visiting guest stars.

This is also one of the only series to broadcast transcribe programs that were recorded in Puerto Rico.  Starting on 02/09/50 the programs were recorded in Puerto Rico and sent to the networks for airing.  Some say this was to avoid income tax.  Whatever the real reason, many of the previously heard stars just didn’t want to travel there for a broadcast and the show soon started a down hill slide in the ratings.

In 1945, Paramount Studio released the motion picture, Duffy’s Tavern,  starring Ed Gardner and a who’s who of the Paramount acting roster.  Bing Crosby, Betty Hutton, Alan Ladd, Paulette Goddard, William Bendix, Sonny Tuffs, Veronica Lake, Barry Fitzgerald and many more appeared.  Ann Thomas played Miss Duffy.

Finally, Duffy’s Tavern also made it to television in 1954 with Pattee Chapman playing Miss Duffy.

One last note, a special thanks to Martin Grams, Jr. for permission to use this log.  Martin did most of the research and I added additional information to it.
