Radio Broadcast Log Of:

Suspense

 

     CBS broadcast audition programs on their experimental series FORECAST.  These were test programs that would possibly be considered for future programming.  On 07/22/40 one such program was aired which would, two years later, make the CBS lineup and continue for twenty additional years.  Broadcast # 4 was entitled Suspense and the script heard was “The Lodger,” starring Herbert Marshall and Noreen Gammill.  It was directed by Alfred Hitchcock, yes the same screen director who would become legendary with suspenseful movies, television and magazines stories.

 

     Beginning with “The Burning Court” on 06/17/42, this series continued for 945 broadcasts and ended with “Devilstone” on 09/30/62.  This is certainly one of the few long running radio programs that you might like to have in your collection.  A good mixture of great scripts and virtually a who’s who of Hollywood were heard by the listeners to this series.  Jack Benny, Dennis Day, Orson Welles, Cary Grant, Robert Young, Charles Laughton, Elsa Lanchester, Lucille Ball, Agnes Moorehead, Peter Lorre, Joan Crawford were among hundreds of others to  appeared before the CBS microphones week after week to entertain the fans of these broadcasts.

 

     This radio series has been documented and written about again and again as one of the best examples of radio drama and suspense programming at its best.  One of the best books written on this series (also including television broadcasts) is by Martin Grams, Jr.  The title “Suspense: Twenty Years Of Thrills And Chills” is a most for your old time radio reference library.  I highly recommend it.

 

     To date, there are approximately 30 programs that have eluded collectors so far.  From time to time a broadcast becomes available from this small pool of missing shows, so hopefully some day we will have the complete run of broadcasts from this fine series.
