The Adventures Of Superman

     This American favorite, was created by Jerry (Jerome) Siegel (writer) and Joe (Joseph) Shuster (artist) in the summer of 1933.  The first story written by Jerry Siegel, “The Reign Of The Superman,” actually had Superman cast as a villain.  Jerry Siegel (10/17/14 – 01/28/98) was born Cleveland, OH.  Joe Shuster (07/10/14 – 07/30/92) was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and moved to Cleveland at age 9.  These two Cleveland teenagers failed repeatedly to find any comic publishers and newspapers to print their stories.  Finally in June of 1938 National Periodicals (later known as DC Comics) published Action Comics Vol. 1, No. 1 featuring Superman on the cover.  The cost for that issue was $0.10.  The storyline was so successful, that in 1939 Superman comics appeared under its own title.  They sold their rights to this creation in 1938 for $130.00.

 

     DC Comic’s press agents Allen Ducovny and Robert Joffe Maxwell developed this new series and explored various licensing rights for merchandising the popular comic book characters.  Radio’s vast audience seemed like the right target and in 1939 they prepared several sample audition disks for prospective sponsors and stations.  In these early audition disks, Clark Kent worked for the New York Daily Flash (not the Daily Planet) and instead of Perry White the editor was referred to as Paris White.
